I really like the soft, water-colour-like lighting on these pages.
It’s a direct parallel! Which makes Gunner’s actions throughout the series even more repugnant. He really did become everything that they hated about the GEF.
Wow. Pacifism turned sour. it usually is the ones who are raised in certain ideals that get twisted the most. So many examples I’ll just leave it at that.
The thing is, weren’t there other ways they could have averted annihilation without going against their ideals? I mean, they were all psychics. Didn’t they see what was coming? If they have people able to see the future, how come they didn’t take steps to avoid it?
Well, I guess those questions will be answered shortly, eh?

If ayone wants a story written about a certain character I will take a shot at it. Only stipulation is, don[‘t ask for anything that may go against canon. In other words, I will only do stories based in the past where it won’t get in the way of the current arc, or side stories that take place within the main comic that won’t deviate from the major plot.

What makes you think they did not see this happening … perhaps this happening was.. the best option for promoting perhaps spreading their philosophical pacifism across space?
What if they saw a future with them in it that was not to their liking.. and the only way to ‘save’ their race.. was to allow Zap to start over.. with his dream girl?
We presume a future with Zap’s race in it was preferable.. but we don’t know that. It must have been some profound reson a race of psychics would allow themselves to be wiped out. And keep in mind.. there are STILL a lot of psychics out there.. that have nothing to do with Zap or Gunner’s race.
Remember Vatalli{sp?}.. William’s mentor.. he also let himself be slain… cause for powerful psychics.. is Death really the End?
I think Zap and Gunner’s race let themselves be destoryed for a reason. It may not be without some designed purpose that both Zap and Gunner {psychics so diametrically different} are specifically are the ONLY two survivors.
Just something to ponder outside the obvious…

That level of pacifism sounds good in theory, but I just can’t get on board with that. Nothing wrong with self-defense in my book. But I also think it’s too easy for a strong civilization, especially a powerful one like a bunch of psychics, to cross over beyond basic self-defense and become violent and confrontational. It’s a difficult issue with no easy answers….But you know it would be a big indication of why Zap didn’t kill Gunner. It’s part of his culture. Disarm or disable him, but don’t destroy him. Although it seems that his people wouldn’t even go so far as to simply disable the GEF. Gosh this is gonna be quite a flashback exposition, isn’t it. It’s gonna make us debate and cry and all sorts of stuff.
I love the soft lighting of these ruins. It really reflects the peaceful demeanor of Zap’s face. I’m still squeamish about those screw holes. Poor guy!

I agree safyr, if all life is precious, that should include your own, and therefore if someone attempts to take your life, you have to defend it to prove its value. I think the hardest part is qualifying “self-defense.”

Why didn’t they fight back? Thats an easy one: they could feel all the pain that fighting brings.

There are other ways of avoiding annihilation without fighting back.
Aw, you guys deserve a little spoiling! And who knows how my drawing schedule will get messed up by the arrival of the volume 3 books (what with the sketching I have to do in them + shipping) so l’ll dish out extra updates when I can! :D
well, it’s not like they all just laid down and died. They just did not win.
But, philosophically, if you are being accused of being a monster by a group, and then you lash out in defense, you give them the justification of their fear of you. It’s a real boondoggle.

Yeah, that’s the downside with people, instead of a person. You can take perfectly reasonable, rational people and put them into a big group. Then you tell them all a convincing lie and watch them act nothing at all like they would by themselves XD

Not all psychics are clairvoyant. The term psychic is a bit of a misnomer, but of course they didn’t call themselves that. Just like Indians aren’t necessarily from India.
They left after they realized Naveed was Team Gunner.

There is total passiveness where you let the tiger walk up to you and eat you while singing dinner music.
Then there is the passive defense where you put up an insurmountable barrier – Pangolin / Rhino.
Then there is misdirection and camouflage.
Also there is the basic strategy of “Run Away” which is mostly effective.
With a large enough group of psychics there should be enough with a good grasp of Strategy, Tactics and Logistics. If it was me, I would use a passive defense knowing full well that it would fail eventually. Then use misdirection to fake getting exterminated. Lastly I would use Run Away and camouflage to get as far away as possible and just keep going. To infinity and beyond.

I just had another crazy idea. What if the whole genocide was a massive mind frack? The psychics could have tricked the GEF into thinking that they were being wiped out, when really they were going into hiding. The three lost ones would have been sacrificed to the GEF, and wouldn’t have been in on the deception.
I know it doesn’t fit with parts of the story, but it’s what I would have tried if I were them.
